Nils Lofgren Tells Tales of His Late ‘70s L. ecommendations.

Hans Pfitzner Composer. Piano Quintet in C, O. 3 Work. Ulf Hoelscher Ensemble Ensemble. Sextet in G-, O. 5 Work.

Pfitzner’s piano quintet is a rather remarkable, grand work (45 minutes), and I’d rate it as something of a must for fans of romantic chamber music. The Sextet for clarinet, string trio, double bass and piano inhabits a very different sound world. Dating from 1945 (it was the composer’s penultimate work), this is a light and sunny work, and probably deliberately conservative in character. There are two works here from the opposite ends of Pfitzner's composing career. The Quintet, Op. 23, for piano and string quartet, is from 1908 and shows Pfitzner at his most hyperchromatic. It's a gargantuan work, clocking in at forty-five minutes. The long first movement is filled with clotted and anguished chromatic harmonies and undistinguished motivic materials.

A piano sextet is a composition for piano and five other musical instruments, or a group of six musicians who perform such works. There is no standard grouping of instruments with that name, and compared to the string quartet or piano quintet literature, relatively few such compositions exist. The best-known piano sextet is probably the Sextet by Poulenc, one of the pinnacles of the wind and piano repertoire.

A piano trio by Pfitzner may seem a daunting prospect, especially when the piece in question lasts for three-quarters of an hour (Op. 8): perhaps this was the reasoning behind CPO's 'special price' for this product. That said, it is difficult to imagine anyone with a penchant for late-Romantic music being disappointed by this release. Chamber music was part of the entire gamut.
