In this 2006 disc joining his Istar, Poème des rivage, and Diptyque méditerranéen, Emmanuel Krivine and the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg do their best to turn d'Indy's scores into the sumptuous, voluptuous, and occasionally lubricious very late Romantic works they long to be - and fall short. Diptyque Méditerranéen for orchestra, Op 87. 6. 1. Soleil matinal.

Vincent d’Indy is another -century composer who is all but forgotten. A Franck and Wagner disciple, he reacted obstinately against modern contemporaries, even Ravel, although he admired the Debussy of L’après-midi and the Nocturnes. The widowed D’Indy fell ardently in love, which was reciprocated, with a student 36 years his junior and the straitlaced Roman Catholic musician suddenly acknowledged the underlying sensuality of his nature
Since 2006, Emmanuel Krivine has been Music Director of the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg. Both on tour and at the Philharmonie Luxembourg, the orchestra’s home base, he has undertaken a great variety of projects, in collaboration with many great soloists. His recent recordings with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg include (on Timpani) a disc devoted to Vincent d’Indy (Poème des rivages, Diptyque méditerranéen, et. and two of orchestral music by Claude Debussy, as well as (on Zig Zag Territoires/Outhere) a disc of music by Ravel (Shéhérazade, Boléro, La Valse, et. With La Chambre Philharmonique, on Naïve, he has released recordings of the music of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (the Italian and Reformation symphonies), Antonín Dvorák (the ‘New World’Symphony), Robert Schumann (Konzertstück op.

Poème des rivages - Istar - Diptyque méditerranéen, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, direction Emmanuel Krivine. The strings of the Luxembourg Philharmonique are surprisingly good - essential in these glowing works - while the highly experienced Krivine provides a steady measured hand, controlling and delivering the more complex passages where French orchestras can sometimes begin to unravel and lose ensemble. I still think Krivine's Mozart Jupiter Symphony with the Philharmonia on Denon is the best on record.
Vincent d’Indy’s orchestral works exist on the outermost fringes of the orchestral repertoire. Even the delightful Symphony on a French Mountain Air seems to have fallen by the wayside. The two works were inspired partly by the sunny regions of Provence, partly by the composer’s happy marriage to a much younger wife (nothing else quite gets those old creative juices flowing). In short, this is really good music, and both the playing of the Luxembourg orchestra and Timpani’s sonics are excellent. Listen, and judge for yourself. Recording Details: Reference Recording: None.
