This is an absolute monster. An INSTRUMENTAL heavy funk / brass rock LP, recorded in 1971, live at Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas. Sturges is the arranger and conductor. The band is as follows:Trumpets: Bobby Shew (lead), Tommy Porrello, Jon Murakami, Rich Cooper, Derek WatkinsTrombones: Jim Trimble (lead), Bill Booth, Dan Trinter, Stan Nishamura (bass trombone)Saxes: Archie Wheeler, Burt Esterman, Don Menza, John Phillips, Gary FreymanFrench Horns: Art Maebe, Dick Perissi, Aubrey Bouck, Ralph PollockLead Guitar: Dean ParksBass: Dennis Kelly, Don BaldwinOrgan, Electric Piano: Hal SteschPercussion: Roger RamptonCongas, Bongos: Mike LewisDrums: Jimmy ManoneAll but a couple of tracks are covers. But they're not like covers of the Beatles or Burt Bacharach. No Macarthur Park here. Instead they're like covers of Mountain and Grand Funk and The Flock. Like, *weird* stuff to cover. I don't even know how this LP got made or why anybody made it. Imagine a Las Vegas band, the sorta band who mighta backed Tom Jones, recorded a super-heavy brass-rock LP. In 1971. BECAUSE THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THIS IS. There's a couple of quieter bits but largely this just stomps along like Godzilla, super fat drums, wig-out acid rock guitar, and massive brass riffs. I'm a sucker for late 60s / early 70s " big band Vegas funk" type stuff anyway, like that first track on the double-live Vikki Carr LP, but I've never heard that sorta band go all-out thunder-rock like this. Just buy it, second-hand copies aren't even expensive, this is a crazy slept-on LP.
