The recorded sound of Henry Purcell: The Masque in Dioclesian/Dido and Aeneas is just OK; neither loud nor bright, a little muffled and somewhat dull. When one hears a bit of stereo separation among the singers, it seems like an event. Forty years hence there are ample opportunities for both works. But one could make a worse choice than this, and for those mainly interested in these now historic performances, Henry Purcell: The Masque in Dioclesian/Dido and Aeneas is perfectly adequate.

Dioclesian (The Prophetess: or, The History of Dioclesian) is a tragicomic semi-opera in five acts by Henry Purcell to a libretto by Thomas Betterton based on the play The Prophetess, by John Fletcher and Philip Massinger, which in turn was based very loosely on the life of the Emperor Diocletian. It was premiered in late May 1690 at the Queen's Theatre, Dorset Garden. The play was first produced in 1622
