Continuing their trawl through the vaults of Joe Ruffino's legendary New Orleans R&B labels Ric and Ron, Ace pairs the complete Ric and Ron recordings of Tommy Ridgley with the complete sides of the singer's friend and follower Bobby Mitchell. The reason they're paired on a single disc instead of showcased on an individual title is simple: by 2015 standards, neither cut enough material to fill out a CD. Ridgley came much closer than Mitchell, though.
Tommy Ridgley was a mainstay of the New Orleans scene for six decades, staying ahead of the changes black American music went through in the 60s. The quality of his Ric sides is uniformly high, resulting in several local hits. Blues icon Freddy King covered ‘Double Eye Whammy’ and ‘The Girl From Kooka Monga’ later in the 60s, while gems such as ‘Heavenly’ and ‘Honest I Do’ are great examples of the big city soul sound. This CD marks the first occasion on which all six of his Sho-Biz and Ron recordings have been reissued in the same place. Not everyone who emerged from New Orleans in this era was guaranteed the success of Fats Domino, but the sides here prove that, like their labelmates Eddie Bo and Johnny Adams, Tommy Ridgley and Bobby Mitchell were in contention every time they put out a new 45. Tommy Ridgley was already over 10 years into a career that would span six decades when he cut the first of his sides for Ric, and it’s his recordings for the label that make up the bulk of this collection. The remaining six cuts feature former doo-wopper Bobby Mitchell. And it’s pretty much all good – very good, in places. Is It True is classic Fats Domino-esque N’Awlins stomp: a ripping vocal backed by sugar-sweet backgrounds and rasping horns.
