If there were ever an appropriate label to release Speedball's "Do Unto Others, Then Split," it was Energy Records. This and Souls at Zero "a Taste for the Perverse" were two releases from the now-defunct New York label that caught my eye upon their release in 1995. I think this album only really kicks into high gear with track number five, "God of Slumber," a definite standout with a catchy song structure and memorable chorus. See How They Run" has a cool riff and "Sin" is a fast, rockin' tune that I've always liked.

Arranged By – Speedball Bass, Backing Vocals – Jeff King Drums – Mike Alonso Engineer – Jim Sabella, Kenni Gioia Guitar – Bill Kozy Guitar, Vocals – Chuck Burns Mastered By – Greg Calbi. Producer – Steve Thompson Written-By – Chuck Burns.

Speedball is Chuck Burns' pack of Detroit wolves, intent on worshipping the MC5 credo on Do Unto Others Then Split (Energy, 1995). Their virulent strain of rock and roll is matched by particularly vulgar lyrics All Screwed Up is the most tender of these visceral attacks on civilization. The punk-rock excesses pause only for the power-pop hooks of Piss And Moan.

As I trembled The walls came down in fear Hello misery Your company is here And the temptation starts To bleed my empty heart As I froze I all came out hollow Greeting fire Are you the one to follow? Drained and useless As I came for you Unto others Come be my shadow Feed upon me Until I'm vanquished Demon caller.

Great example of Detroit's vast talent. Underground, dirty and aggressive with a heavily handed punk influence. This fun to listen to single finger salute, hasn't gotten old in all the years i've lsitened to it. Hell, even Lemmy Kilmeister listed Chuck and the guys of Speedball as one of his favorite things about Detroit. Keep an eye out for the rare reunion shows down at Short's in Hamtramck and catch a show in Detroit; the city where the weak are killed and eaten, SPEEDBALL lives on.
