As short lived as that first wave of garage rock was in the mid-1960s (it didn’t even have a name until critics in the 1970s got nostalgic), few genres have branched into more great music (punk, psychedelia, post-punk, power pop, et. or had the staying power of garage rock. 36. Coathangers: Suck My Shirt (2014) The Coathangers kick off their fourth album of elemental punk and garage rock with Follow Me, a burst of slashing guitar and brutal, stomping drums. At its best, their 1969 debut, Philosophy of the World is a ramshackle cult classic made up of disjointed yet charming garage-pop sounds; at its worst, some have found it almost unlistenable.

60 tracks of the finest slices of JSG in its various guises, as established by collectors around the world over the past decade. Themed by arch JSG collector and musician Phil King into three groups; Rock Off! for the heads down boogie sounds; Tubthumpers & Hellraisers for the footstomping hand clapping pop pounders; Elegance & Decadence for the mascara masquerading gender bending weird and wonderful

Nuggets from Southern California is Big Beat's third collection of goodies from the Downey archives, featuring 24 tunes from West Coast rock bands, and while the title might lead some to expect a nonstop blast of paisley and fuzz, this set is more diverse than that.

Exploring Synth-pop and Garage Rock. Classic Pop - The Ultimate Collection. Belgian Nuggets 90s-00s, Vol. 2. Various.

Various Artists – Nuggets (1972). While there weren’t many Garage Rock acts that got their act together sufficiently to make a whole album strong enough to justify a purchase alongside one or two outstanding singles, it’s fair to say that this compilation did more for those bands’ rehabilitation than any other release. beat pop era they sprang from. It rescued neglected classic cuts such as The Standells’ Dirty Water, The Count Five’s Psychotic Reaction and The Castaways’ Liar Liar from the bargain bucket of history, and the expanded box sets and sequels released since have unearthed many more glorious rough gems from the same era. The Cramps – Songs The Lord Taught Us (1980).

Jack’s Delta-roadhouse fantasies, Detroit-garage-rock razzle and busted-love lyricism, as well as Meg’s toy-thunder drumming all peaked at once. King’s first album for the Stax label combines his hard, unflashy guitar playing with the sleek sound of the label’s house band, Booker T. and the MG’s. Hits such as Crosscut Saw and Laundromat Blues earned King a new rock & roll audience. Stephin Merritt lived out a Tin Pan Alley fantasy as he spooled his droll bass over synth pop, bubblegum, Afropop, show tunes, country and more. It's irony on steroids, but try to get through "Papa Was a Rodeo" without shedding a tear.

Bubblegum pop (also known as bubblegum music or simply bubblegum) is a genre of pop music with an upbeat sound contrived and marketed to appeal to pre-teens and teenagers, which may be produced in an assembly-line process, driven by producers and often using unknown singers. Bubblegum's classic period ran from 1967 to 1972. A second wave of bubblegum began two years later and ran until 1977 when disco took over.

2 Various Artists, ‘Nuggets’. When Patti Smith guitarist Lenny Kaye complied this primo selection of US psych and garage, he set the benchmark for all future compilations in the genre. The 1972 double album influenced punk – one of the first mentions of the term was in the sleevenotes – and reaffirmed the rock and roll agenda in an era that had been hijacked by concept albums and overindulgent head music. Nuggets’ showcases perfect teenage kicks, from out and out bubblegum to unhinged primal screaming fuzz tone. Cheaply recorded over four days in 1966 New York, the debut Velvet’s album is pop art incarnate. It may be hard to think of anything fresh to say about this iconic, Warhol sleeved and financed set, yet John Cale’s dense layering of sound and deft arrangements make it is easy to hear something new in the recording each time you spin it. I never tire of this record.
