I was a big fan of the original Twin Peaks series to the point of watching it all again just prior to the beginning of the new "limited event series." Alas I was disappointed in the newer version which picks up 25 years after the original. While the original series was sexy and quirky, this extension was laborious to watch, kind of like watching paint dry to use a frequent term. Still, I looked forward to the final musical scenes, more often than not staged at the "Bang Bang Bar." Regardless of co-creator and director David Lynch's story telling techniques, his taste in music seems to replicate my own. Certainly the most noteworthy selection on this excellent compilation is "No Stars" which he co-wrote with John Neff and Rebekah Del Rio. Del Rio performs the song easily sliding from English to Spanish and back without missing a beat. It is a beautiful song, reminenscent of her a cappella version of Roy Orbison's "Crying" from Lynch's film masterpiece, "Mulholland Drive." The album features songs from across the musical spectrum including some old standbys by Otis Redding, ZZ Top and Booker T. & The MG's. Included are songs from Eddie Vedder sans Pearl Jam and Nine Inch Nails. Another great discovery is a group called Trouble. Another is Chromatics. Only James Marshall, who also plays a carry-over character from the original show, left me a bit flat with a song called "Just You." One of my favorite albums of the year.
