The Thrill of It All is the second studio album by English singer and songwriter Sam Smith. On 6 October 2017, Smith announced via Twitter that his second album, titled "The Thrill of It All", was to be released on 3 November 2017. It is Smith's second full album of material after his hugely successful debut album In the Lonely Hour (2014), which has sold 12 million copies worldwide.
Where Lonely Hour led with beats, Thrill of It All opens on lonely piano chords and Smith’s whispering high tenor, which sweeps up to falsetto on the pre-chorus, soon echoed by a choir and handclaps. The song, Too Good at Goodbyes, has gotten over 120 million YouTube plays since its release as a single, and establishes the ruling formula for album, one which Smith laid out on his biggest hit Stay With Me – an aching lover pleading with a paramour against slow-building gospel-pop rapture. Him elevates a set of brilliantly-sung songs into a potent concept album that universalizes heartbreak from a distinctly LGBTQ point of view. Yes, the magic beats of Latch are missed. But here’s hoping for a house remix of Him that will raise the roof in clubs gay and straight for years to come. Download Sam Smith – The Thrill of It All Album (Zip).
Nothing Left For You 12. The Thrill Of It All 13. Scars 14. One Day At A Time. Though it’s the first line of the fiery standout HIM, it’s a sentiment that sets the tone for The Thrill of It All, a diary-like album that has all the power and intimacy of a confession-as well as the catharsis that follows. Smith’s voice sounds as impressive as ever throughout. Burning is a spare, piano-led ballad inspired by the personal struggles that accompanied his breakthrough success. Pray, another gospel-informed stunner, soars with an uplifting choir and handclapped groove courtesy of Timbaland.
And now comes The Thrill of It All, a collection of unassuming love songs that tends to get better the more times you listen. It opens with Too Good at Goodbyes, a soaring anthem to being callously thick-skinned. Even at a compact 10 songs, The Thrill of It All has a dull spot or two. Baby You Make Me Crazy is boilerplate. Palace sounds gorgeous, until you listen to the lyrics, and then it sounds silly. As far as metaphors go, you can do worse than our love is a falling-down building, but you can do better, too, and the line, Real love is never a waste of time isn’t strong enough to bear all that many repetitions. But these are small quibbles, and at a brisk 35 minutes, the album is so aerodynamically constructed that it quickly flies past any rough patches
His new album, The Thrill of It All, leans on the same strengths that made In the Lonely Hour one of this decade’s most successful debuts. His voice is an ocean liner that can turn on a dime; his ballads are built around mournful piano melodies and fleshed out with choral arrangements; he doles out feelings in bushels. It’s a formula that remains commercially unimpeachable-lead single Too Good at Goodbyes has lingered around the Billboard Top 10 since its release-but it can be exhausting, especially over the course of an entire album
