When the early critics of rock & roll wanted to make a case in point for the sheer mindlessness of the lyrics, "Be Bop a Lula" made an easy target. Supposedly based on the Little Lulu comic strip, this rock & roll classic was written by Gene Vincent, a rockabilly singer who fronted one of the hottest bands in the country, the Blue Caps. Vincent's breathless, panting vocal made the inane lyrics seem loaded with sexual dynamite and an easy target for outraged moralists nationwide. Taken at a slow, bluesy tempo, the track was also highly charged with great slam-bang rhythm.
