Red is the seventh studio album by English progressive rock group King Crimson, released in 1974 by Island Records in the United Kingdom and by Atlantic Records in the United States. It was their last studio recording of the 1970s and the last before lead member Robert Fripp temporarily disbanded the group. Though their lowest-charting album at the time, spending only one week in the UK charts, Red has received critical acclaim.

Yet, in the midst of the meltdown, it’s surprisingly their hardest-hitting, most cohesive album they released up to this point. Bringing back players from their past, including David Cross (who left during the initial sessions for this album but returned briefly to do more violin work), Mel Collins, Ian McDonald and Mark Charig.

Crimson-with their drum solos and multi-part epics, their Mellotrons and tales of purple pipers-had become what he called a dinosaur band. While it would serve as the band’s final statement of the decade, Red, released in the autumn of 1974, does not sound like a eulogy. Red was the first Crimson album to retain the compact, five-song structure of Crimson King and the only to match its impact or influence.
