Sergej Sergejevič Prokofjev; 27 April 1891 – 5 March 1953) was a Russian Soviet composer, pianist and conductor. The second quartet, composed in 1941, finds Prokofiev encountering untouched folk material that he sensitively, humbly and with the precise degree of artistic stylization incorporated into the "Kabardinian" quartet. Both of these works are too rarely played and there is so much more of the essence of Prokofiev here, especially in the consummate performances captured here that they deserve far more attention than they have earned. Despite the harrowing conditions of war, Prokofiev had been flown to safety in the Caucasus, and as you'd expect, he readily conformed to Soviet musical restrictions that were anti-modernist and pro-patriotism.

Prokofiev's Second Quartet is one of the most immediately attractive quartets in the repertoire. In the wondrous Adagio the cello line rises high, ghostly melodic statements in octaves can expose the smallest tuning difficulties and pizzicati needs must sparkle like ice. The young players pass every test before dispatching the inventive finale with equal aplomb.
