Our new track premiere today comes to us from Dublin composer Jonathan Nangle and Crash Ensemble, Ireland’s leading contemporary music ensemble. Their upcoming release Pause (Ergodos) is Nangle’s debut album and features serenely atmospheric music for strings with and without electronics. Where distant city lights flicker on half-frozen ponds (2011) for solo violin and resonators is the first track on the album, and Crash Ensemble member Aoife Ní Bhriain navigates a plethora of double stops, gossamer harmonics, and tender melodies with exceptional sensitivity. Composer Jonathan Nangle releases new album, Pause, this month (14th July) on the Ergodos label. The new album features luminous recordings by Crash Ensemble. Pause is the debut album from a composer whose work draws on a carefully selected palette of ravishingly beautiful materials. This is music of serene focus; often fragile, always intricately woven. The mercurial title track, Pause, was inspired by the idea of data glitches in both music and visual media. The track Pause was commissioned by The Dock for Crash Ensemble, with funds provided by the Arts Council, An Chomhairle Ealaíon.

Inspired by the idea of data glitches in both music and visual medium, PAUSE emerged from a short two bar phrase from Charles Ives’ ‘Concord Sonata’ (1919), specifically from the third movement, ‘The Alcott’s’. This snippet of material was processed through custom built software that rearranged and deliberately glitched the music and the outcome of this was then notated and served as a springboard to new material and provided the piece with its aesthetic. Material is often repeated, as if stuck.
