When we last heard from Void Of Sleep, they were wowing us with their unheralded debut album (one of 2013’s best releases) and bumming us out with news of a crippling loss of resources (via a daytime theft of gear in Rome last year). Each of these events might motivate or deflate a young, unmoored band, so we’ve had our fingers crossed that the latter wouldn’t crush their energy and the former wouldn’t sap their hunger.

Forged in Ravenna, Italy, VOID OF SLEEP is comprised of guitarist Gale, vocalist/guitarist Burdo, drummer Allo and bassist Paso. Following a three-song promo EP, Giants & Killers, which garnered the attention of Italian imprint, Aural Music, the band released their full-length debut, Tales Between Reality And Madness. The record proved wholly engrossing both sonically and thematically with lyrics exploring the darkest corners of the human psyche, oneiric visions and lysergic nightmares

The compositions are tighter and more complex and fluid; built upon a restlessly inventive drum and bass rhythm combo and fleshed out by the intricate and textured guitar work which hits a sweet spot of melody, adventure and groove. And although the guitar work takes on a more unpredictable and psychedelic path, those bulldozing bluesy doom riffs that were such a joy on Tales are rarely in short supply here. Void of Sleep closes out the album with the complex proggy stoner jam of 14 minute epic Ending Theme’, which manages to grip from start to finish despite its mammoth length.

But trust me, you will totally enjoy the process like for example when you try to decipher the fourteen minutes of Ending Time that will leave you hungry for more as if you have just finished reaching the first part of a really long read. The way the album’s mix has given to the bass the leading role works great and fits like a tailored suit to the multi-character singing
