Georg Christoph Biller (born 20 September 1955) is a German choral conductor. He conducted the Thomanerchor as the sixteenth Thomaskantor since Johann Sebastian Bach from 1992 to 2015. He is also a baritone, an academic teacher and a composer. Born in Nebra, Biller was a Thomaner, a member of the Thomanerchor, from 1965 to 1974 with Erhard Mauersberger and Hans-Joachim Rotzsch.

Bach: Cantatas For The Ascension; Liturgical Year With Johan. The longest cantata of this CD, Gott fähret auf mit Jauchzen (BWV 43), has 11 movements and is of particularly festive character, expressed prominently by trumpets, timpani and oboes. Georg Christoph Biller, current cantor at St Thomas, performs the cantatas with extraordinary boys' voices in the solo parts for soprano and alto; a sign of the new recording's unique quality. Orchestra: Thomanerchor Leipzig, Gewandhaus Orchestra.

By this time, the hall was well established as the centre of Leipzig's concert life and would remain so for the subsequent 100 years. The nine symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven received their first performance as a complete cycle worldwide during the composer's lifetime in the 1825/26 season.

Most of Bach's cantatas date from his first years as Thomaskantor (director of church music in Leipzig), a position which he took up in 1723. Working especially at the Thomaskirche and the Nikolaikirche, it was part of his job to perform a church cantata every Sunday and holiday, conducting soloists, the Thomanerchor and orchestra as part of the church service. Although the German term Bachkantate (Bach cantata) became very familiar, Bach himself rarely used the title Cantata in his manuscripts. In Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen, BWV 56, he wrote Cantata à Voce Sola e Stromenti (Cantata for solo voice and instruments). However, the spurious cantatas retain their BWV numbers. The List of Bach cantatas is organized by BWV number but sortable by other criteria.
