The works by Jean Sibelius on this fine release are generally programmed singly, as appetizers or curtain calls for the supposedly more serious symphonies of Sibelius and others. Hearing them together puts them in a different light, in addition to being just plain enjoyable. What strikes the listener is the range of orchestral textures. It's as great as in the symphonies, which differ not so much in the orchestral writing as in the comparatively more complex thematic development

The centerpiece of the album is the Four Legends from the Kalevala, also known as the Lemminkäinen Suite. First composed in 1895-6, this proto-symphony stands alongside Karelia and En Saga as one of the composer's earliest "canonical" works. Like En Saga, the Legends were subsequently revised, and the version recorded here reflects Sibelius' final 1939 emendations. Vänskä and the Lahtis have actually recorded this piece twice. But Bis decided to recall them to the studio in 2007 for.
