Fast 'n' Bulbous' second album serves up another set of Captain Beefheart covers, this tribute given more weight than most such projects owing to the presence of guitarist Gary Lucas, who actually played in Beefheart's band in the early '80s. Almost wholly instrumental, the material tackled spans the Captain's entire career, from Safe as Milk's "Sure 'Nuff 'n' Yes I Do" to "Ice Cream for Crow.
The idea of the music of Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet) without his idiosyncratic bark of a voice might be difficult for devotees to take, much as his music will perhaps always be for other people. In the circumstances the fact that some of it does is, however, a tribute to the band's application.

Waxed Oop. "Please retry". While PCBATR drew heavily from Trout Mask, Waxed Oop reaches back to Safe as Milk and Strictly Personal, with the result that this album is a bit more straight-ahead and 4/4 and rockin' than the last. This isn't a bad thing as it gives the music an appeal quite separate from and independent of its ties to its Beefheartian origins.

Fast 'N' Bulbous is the brainchild of Gary Lucas and saxophonist arranger of its blazing four-piece brass section, Phillip Johnston. The rhythm section get right inside the structure of these tunes, Lucas synthesises two guitars' lines into one, while the brass take care of the main themes, teasing out unexpected melodies. NYC-based Beefheart septet has Magic Band guitarist Gary Lucas on board.
