Fans of his breakout Calypso LP from 1956 will find several tracks here - the obvious "Banana Boat Song (Day-O)" plus "Jamaica Farewell" and "Man Smart (Woman Smarter)," though unfortunately not "Brown Skin Girl

Harry Belafonte became an international recording star in the 1950's with his introduction of the calypso genre to the pop music listening public. Belafonte has won three Grammy Awards and also has had a career as an actor in motion pictures and television. He has recorded and performed in a number of musical genres including folk, blues, gospel and pop standards. His 1956 album Calypso was the first million-selling LP by a solo artist. He is most closely associated with his hit single "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song). An often covered folk song written by Malvina Reynolds, Alan Greene, and Belafonte himself, this appeared on his 1959 album Love is a Gentle Thing. The track is, in fact, quite gentle and makes a point of how life flies by, and should be cherished. This tune features a backing track that employs lots of steel drum and horn sounds.

Very Best of Harry Belafonte. I would not be complete without Belafonte's signature piece, the tropical work song "Day . Its lasting appeal has probably been because of its place in music history as a cultural reference point, but it is also a wonderful showcase for the control Belafonte had over his instrument. Just try mimicking his note-perfect run of "He say day, he say day, he say day o-o-o" and you'll get the point.
