The quirky, orchestrated folk-rock of Nico's 1968 debut album, Chelsea Girl, in no way prepared listeners for the stark, almost avant-garde flavor of her 1969 follow-up, The Marble Index. The chanteuse presented an uncompromisingly bleak, gothic soundscape on her second album. Dominated by spare harmonium and Nico's deep, brooding vocals, this album unveiled her singularly morose songwriting (her first record featured none of her compositions).

The Marble Index is a Canadian rock band from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The group formed in 2001, and comprised Brad Germain (guitars and vocals), Ryan Tweedle (bass), and Adam Knickle (drums). The band is named after the album The Marble Index by Nico. Not be to be confused with the American rock band The Marble Index from Austin, Texas, which formed in 1993 and disbanded in 1995.

The Marble Index is the second solo album and third studio album by German musician Nico, which was released in November 1968 on Elektra Records. The sound introduced in the album-a stark contrast with her folk pop debut, Chelsea Girl-was the result of the combination of Nico's droning harmonium and somber vocals, and producer John Cale's musical arrangements, which were inspired by modern European classical music. It's so suicidal!'" The original release of The Marble Index included eight of 12 songs Nico recorded. Roses in the Snow", "Nibelungen", "Sagen die Gelehrten" and "Reve Reveiller" were left off the album.
