Concerts is a live double album by English avant-rock group Henry Cow, recorded at concerts in London, Italy, the Netherlands and Norway between September 1974 and October 1975. Sides one and two of the LP record consist of composed material while sides three and four contain improvised pieces. The album includes Henry Cow's last John Peel Session, recorded in September 1975 and extracts from a concert with Robert Wyatt at the New London Theatre in May 1975
With UNREST, Henry Cow moved beyond the jazz-influenced sound of their first recording, LEG END, on to an album with two personalities - the composed pieces are definitely more & in their compositions, and the improvisations feature a technique still evolving within the band, that of using the studio itself as an instrument of composition. The album opens with quite a catchy little. The arrangement of this piece is very compact and disciplined - every note sounds as if someone assembling a puzzle placed it there, and the effect is quite powerful. All of the elements play a part - nothing is by chance and nothing is wasted - making this one of the most effective instrumentals I've ever heard. The recording on UNREST is much clearer than on LEG END, allowing the listener to more fully appreciate the playing of the various group members.

Henry Cow were formed in 1968, whilst its core members Fred Frith and Tim Hodgkinson were attending Cambridge University. The album has a number of high-points, including the wonderfully titled 'Nirvana For Mice' whose scampering time signature conjures up the patter of thousands of tiny rodent feet, the beautifully expansive 'Amygdala,' and the uplifting and epic 'Teenbeat'. After Unrest, Henry Cow continued in typically eclectic fashion, releasing a collaborative LP with Slapp Happy (Anthony Moore, Peter Blegvad and Dagmar Krause's 'naive pop' group) entitled Desperate Straights, before attempting to combine both groups under the Henry Cow banner for In Praise Of Learning, and finally slimming back down to a quartet for Western Culture.

The album also showed two distinct sides to Henry Cow - side 1 (tracks 1 - 3) featured pieces composed by individual members, whilst side 2 was largely taken up with group improvisations enhanced with studio effects. If you're looking for comparisons, side 1 has a lot in common with Univers Zero, while side 2 is closer to Faust.
