The Arabic world has arguably seen its musical peak decades ago, when the scene was represented by legends such as Umm Kulthum, Farid al Atrache, Fairuz and other names that will remain ingrained in the musical memory. Umm Kulthum (Arabic: أم كلثوم‎, Egyptian Arabic pronunciation: ; born Fāṭima ʾIbrāhīm as-Sayyid al-Baltāǧī فاطمة إبراهيم السيد البلتاجي on December 31, 1898, or May 4, 1904; died February 3, 1975) was an Egyptian singer, songwriter, and film actress active from the 1920s to the 1970s. She was given the honorific title Kawkab al-Sharq (كوكب الشرق, "Star of the East").
