True success was a long time coming for the Bar-Kays, who started out as a sort of second-line studio band behind Booker T. & the MG's at Stax Records in Memphis. After releasing an instrumental hit, "Soul Finger," and becoming the backing band for Otis Redding, it appeared the group was on its way to the kind of success that the MG's had enjoyed. Then disaster struck. The plane crash that killed Redding and his road manager in 1967 also took the lives of four of the Bar-Kays

The Bar-Kays were a funk band you had to hear, whether as a house band at Stax, backing Otis Redding, or doing their own thing. Despite the plane crash that took most of its members, the group carried on, recording on key albums such as Isaac Hayes's Hot Buttered Soul and Shaft. Now the Bar-Kays persist, with only one original member (James Alexander) and only one from their '70s incarnation (Larry Dodson). The group has updated its sound, taking in elements of neo-soul, crunk, and more, but the new album, House Party, falters under the weight of its influences

The Bar-Kays were originally formed in 1966 as a sextet and their biggest hit was 'Soul Finger'. They looked like they had a healthy career in front of them as a session band & recording outfit before the backbone of the group was killed, along with Otis Redding, in a horrific plane crash. Only Ben Cauley survived the crash and went on to form what could be dubbed Bar-Kays Mark II. James Alexander (Bass) was also one of the original members but was not aboard the plane because of limited seats on Redding's plane.

The Bar-Kays were formed in Memphis, TN, in 1966, growing out of a local group dubbed the Imperials. Modeled on classic Memphis soul instrumental outfits like the Mar-Keys and Booker T. & the MG's, the Bar-Kays originally included guitarist Jimmy King (not the famed bluesman), trumpeter Ben Cauley, organist Ronnie Caldwell, saxophonist Phalon Jones, bassist James Alexander, and drummer Carl Cunningham. At first, their sound was similar to the original lineup, and they were used as the house band on numerous Stax/Volt recording sessions; they also backed Isaac Hayes on his groundbreaking 1969 opus Hot Buttered Soul. With 1971's Black Rock album, the Bar-Kays debuted their first-ever lead vocalist, Larry Dodson, and incorporated some of the rock/funk fusions of Sly & the Family Stone and Funkadelic.
