Small Change is the third studio album by Tom Waits, released in 1976 on Asylum Records. It was recorded in July 1976. Small Change was recorded, direct to 2-track stereo tape, July 15, 19–21 and 29, 1976 at the Wally Heider Recording Studio, in Hollywood, USA under the production of Bones Howe

Deeply embedded in the underbelly, Small Change is nevertheless Waits’ most personal, even is most confessional album, somehow refracting the real person through the persona. It didn’t take much for Small Change to outsell Waits’ previous albums, and it finally established him as an artist who could headline instead of support. Over the next few years, he would tour elaborate productions that occasionally incorporated fake snow and stage props. But perhaps the most significant change-the one that really took him out of himself-came in 1978, on the set of Paradise Alley, when Waits met screenwriter Kathleen Brennan. In addition to becoming his songwriting partner, she inspired him to sober up and to expand the sound and scope of his music. I didn’t just marry a beautiful woman, he told The Guardian in 2006.

Small Change isn't his best album. Like most of the albums Waits made in the '70s, it's uneven, probably because he was putting out one a year and didn't have time to come up with enough first-rate material. But it is the most obvious and characteristic of his albums for Asylum Records. If you like it, you also will like the ones before and after; otherwise, you're not Tom Waits' kind of listener.
