Aquilus is a one-man band from Melbourne, Australia, yet after listening to Griseus it seems hard to believe that this entire album could have been written and recorded by only one person. The depth and attention to detail on this album are extremely impressive. Every aspect of the music found here seems as if it was meticulously crafted and placed precisely where it needed to be. No shortcuts appeared to have been taken with this album and it clearly shows. Griseus is truly an impressive piece of music many years in the making, and it was well worth it.

Aquilus is the one-man project of an Australian wizard named Horace Waldorf Rosenqvist, and Griseus is his one-hour, twenty-minute masterpiece - at least until he creates the next masterpiece. I first learned of this album in April through a message from an NCS reader who calls himself FistForFun. And then I got another message from him in May, and another in August, and another in October. Though they grew increasingly strident, the content was essentially the same: Pull your head out of your ass and listen to this damn record!

Aquilus - Primary Artist
This may be one of the longest single disc compact albums of all time: 79:55 minutes in a single disc, with most of the tracks going from 9 to 17 minutes? Boy, you like to do it enormous. Speaking of the project, Griseus is the first (and, by now, only) studio album released by the Australian Aquilus, whose sole member Waldorf had other projects in the past, and designs the whole concept and instrumentation: guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and, why not, some fake acoustic orchestra recreation. The music that comes out is a sort of Progressive/Symphonic Black Metal with a strong My Dying Bride edge and sense of Romanticism designed as trailer music, complete with a sense of immense dread, vacuous reverb and ambience, excess of drama, reel piano fingering, lazy acoustic guitar strums and power-chord based electric guitar chording. All the songs feature an entire rock instrumentation full of pathos (sometimes occupying only a minute, as on “In the Land of Ashes”) and quieter, but still evocative and emotional calmer sections where only the keyboards, acoustic guitar and the skeleton of a drum/bass pattern remain. The guitar tuning and melodic variation varies from B to D#, and it definitely helps to maintain the interest high during the listening. There are a lot of reasons to be interested about this album, and few to be scared. In an interview, Waldorf specified the music on this album had been written for almost a decade, and had taken a lot of time also to record it: we can only imagine the situation. Well, if that’s the result, we can quietly say it was worth the effort. Surely, the album is a ton of bricks regarding its duration: also, it’s very dispersive, since the melodies and the quantity of ambiguous chords used here (included diminished and augmented) can lead to an inevitable lack of focus and fall of momentum. Fortunately, this is all tied together by a functioning production, and authentic maniacal sense of perfectionism in the choice of sounds and keyboard fills that make one think how would an Aquilus show turn out in a live setting. The other reason to be worried is scream/growl vocal choices, but every single metal fan on Earth has the habit to not noticing it. Guitar fanatics may complain for the fact that some of the moments on the album feature less guitar flourishes than they should have.Ultimately, all of these are personal annoyances. Griseus may not be the best album on Earth, but it’s sure to enrich the day of any single person. It’s an album not only fans of Progressive Rock or Extreme Metal, but also of Classical Music may find interesting. Watch out for the second album.Highlights: “Smokefall”, “In the Land of Ashes”, “The Fawn”, “Night Bell”.
