Arthur Nikisch was one among a very small fraternity of nineteenth century conductors who made records, although Toscanini and Felix Weingartner - both of whom made many recordings, including complete Beethoven symphony cycles - also belong to that fraternity. Nikisch died in 1922, slightly before the introduction of the microphone that made orchestral recordings more practical, faithful, and numerous.

Arthur Nikisch (12 October 1855 – 23 January 1922) was a Hungarian conductor who performed internationally, holding posts in Boston, London, Leipzig and-most importantly-Berlin. He was considered an outstanding interpreter of the music of Bruckner, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and Liszt. Johannes Brahms praised Nikisch's performance of his Fourth Symphony as "quite exemplary, it's impossible to hear it any better. Arthur Nikisch (born Lébény Szent Miklós, Hungary, 12 October 1855; died Leipzig, 23 January 1922) was a Hungarian conductor. He conducted in Germany as well as internationally and was thought of as the greatest conductor of his time. Arthur Nikisch was born in Hungary (then the Austro-Hungarian Empire). His father was from Moravia, his mother was Hungarian. As a child he showed exceptional musical talent.
