Univers Zero (also known as Univers Zéro and Univers-Zero) are an instrumental progressive Belgian band formed in 1974 by drummer Daniel Denis. The band is known for playing dark music heavily influenced by 20th-century chamber music. In 1973, Claude Deron and Daniel Denis, both former members of Belgian "Zeuhl" band Arkham (which had disbanded the previous year), set up a new group, Necronomicon.

UNIVERS ZERO managed to masterfully infuse these genres on their first album 1313 in a strange way that took the chamber rock antecedents from musical entities like Art Zoyd and Henry Cow, classical ones from Bartok and Stravinsky and free-jazz like constructions that actually had patterns to them and create interesting yet peculiar musical developments that always lead somewhere that makes total. sense once the mystery of where they go has been presented. UNIVERS ZERO created a musical masterpiece with this first album that interested me upon first listen and still does time and time again

UNIVERS ZERO 1977 1st album masterpiece re-released + bonus track La Faulx. Longstanding Belgian chamber rockers and avant-garde pioneers led by drummer/composer Daniel Denis, Univers Zero was formed in 1974 with co-composer and guitarist Roger Trigaux (who left the band in 1980). This is their first album recorded between the 2nd and the 5th of August 1977. The rhythmic energy and dissonant riffs, the distinctive sound of the bassoon and strings, and the tricky, fragmented time signatures make for a challenging and highly distinctive listening experience.

Univers zero personnel 2004 Univers Zero 2004. The music takes on a more personal expression, largely due to the new compositions contributed by TRIGAUX and DENIS. After a number of line-up changes, the overall sound is augmented by a harmonium and a harpsichord (played by Emmanuel NICAISE) and a second violin (Marcel DUFRANE). UZ has now found the right balance in its combination of acoustic and electric instruments. After the recording of their third album, „CEUX DU DEHORS, the group comes to a temporary halt in 1981. Various financial problems hamper the group in finding its proper equilibrium, eventually threatening its very existence. After several months of inactivity a new-formula UZ resumes touring, now with Dirk DESCHEEMAEKER on clarinet, and Alan WARD on violin.

Some very peculiar rock music hybrids emerged in the 1970s, but none was any more peculiar than Univers Zero, a classically influenced group of primarily Belgian musicians. Sometimes compared to the slightly earlier and enormously influential King Crimson, Univers Zero was actually much more extreme.

Formed in 1974 but releasing their first recording in ’77, Univers Zero were committed to making a very particular kind of non-rock. Their story is even more complex than the music, so we’ll skip over the history part and introduce the band via their instruments, as per the back cover of the self-titled debut album:Michel Berckmans—bassoon // Daniel Denis—drums, percussion // Marcel Dufrane—violin // Christian Genet—bass // Patrick Hannappier—violin, viola, pocket cello // Emmanuel Nicaise—harmonium, spinet // Roger Trigaux—guitarBeing for the most part classically trained, these Euro-dudes could play. As for what they play, imagine dropping acid of uncertain provenance then reading HP Lovecraft stories while listening to Stravinsky in one ear and Red era King Crimson in the other. Univers Zero is not really like that, but it’s compelling composed chamber rock that will surely twist your idea of what (un)popular music can be. The good news is that the second album, Heresie, is much darker.
