Veronica Falls' second album burns brightly but briefly, like a shooting star in the night sky. Waiting for Something to Happen offers a largely breezy succession of heavily harmonised odes to teenage snogging and sneaking in through the back door. You sense the album's title also alludes to the small-town ennui for which popular music has often been the best remedy. There is something marvellously innocent in the sugary vocals, stripped-down guitar and drum lines here. The thrusting So Tired tugs you briefly through a wormhole where videos of Lush, Sleeper and Elastica are still showing – though Veronica Falls would probably prefer comparisons to cooler contemporaries like Comet Gain, Electrelane and The Cribs. What they offer on ‘Waiting For Something To Happen’ is a fey-pop selection box that leaves out the gothic grit and garage-infused rabble of early tracks. Veronica Falls display their influences so blatantly it’s almost brazen; songs on this album would have easily fit into 80s indie pop or C86-ish mixtapes, and it’s clear why this might be a turnoff for some.

The self-titled debut album from rising indie pop group Veronica Falls was an interesting album to say the least. The most striking issue is that it seems Veronica Falls have already run out of ideas. Waiting for Something to Happen is very much the same raw and organic, yet cleanly produced independent jangle rock/noise pop music from their debut, but it feels as though they’re referring to their debut’s blueprint, promptly snuffing the sense of unpredictability that album had.
