The readings from Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic are exquisitely played and splendidly recorded. Von Karajan's way with the music is supple, suave, and dashingly characterful, and his tempos are faultlessly judged. The orchestra is at its best, remarkable for the silky transparency it brings to the texture and the fascinating detail of the solo work-not least, the flute solos by James Galway, then a member of the BPO. The recording has been optimally transferred and presents a solid image. Also here is Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks, Don Juan, and Salome's Dance of the Seven Veils from from his 1905 opera Salome. 3 people found this helpful.

The orchestral playing is glorious, as we would expect (such burnished brass, characterful winds, and rich strings!); moreover, as with the other tone poems in this collection, Solti articulates the narrative structure with compelling cogency. This fine double album is certainly worth anyone's money.

The Chicago Symphony recordings of Don Juan, Till Eulenspiegel, and Also sprach Zarathustra are vivid, brash, and swaggering. It may be that Solti misses some of the humor and charm in Till, but the love music in Don Juan is aptly affectionate, and if he treats Zarathustra as an unabashed orchestral display piece, there’s nothing wrong with that since the whole philosophical underpinning is basically silly anyway.
