Over the years, album covers have become as much a part of music history as the records themselves. From its roots as a sales gimmick, the sleeve became an important element of both the musician's image and their music. Artists were keen to design for this highly prized 12-inch space, with many album covers developing into works of art in themselves. So what are the album covers that defined an era? Or simply changed how album covers were made? 1940. Smash Song Hits by Rodgers & Hart.

Apple began work on her third album Extraordinary Machine in 2002 when Jon Brion, her friend and frequent collaborator asked him if they could start working again to help him get over a break-up. They started working and recording together and played early versions of some songs during Brion’s weekly gigs at LA’s Club Largo. Apple eventually rerecorded the whole album with producer Mike Elizondo, but bootlegs still exist of the Brion sessions as well. The final 2005 Elizondo version was named the best album of the year by both Entertainment Weekly and The New York Times.
