Dolorian’s first album was black/doom and their second was instrumental doom. The elements of both of those albums come together in "Voidwards," though not seamlessly, but fraught with conflicting yet coterminous pathways of soundscape (where boundaries are musically crossed without any pre-planned agenda). So many bands craft their music too delicately, giving in to the desire to be that band that is so layered and complex and unheralded. Dolorian does not give in to the impulse to produce something different for the sake of it, like some seem to do in the extreme metal scene.

From the first minutes of Dual - Void - Trident it becomes clear that Voidwards is far from being your typical Doom album, imagine yourself walking through a never ending, colorless hallway, desperately trying to reach for the exit and uncovering all the horrible secrets hidden in the back of your mind, as the album progresses into nothingness you too will be lost in the.

Dolorian - Primary Artist
Fans may consider Voidwards (good wordplay) as a medium line between When All Laughter Has Gone and their eponymous album: however, we see Dolorian’s third and last album to date as an entity of its own. The lyrics now enforce the listener to leave his old ways and take a journey through eternal and spiritual knowledge. The concept is 1000% linked with Occultism and philosophy, along with some references to anatomy (“Two hundred and six embryos / Edge… the ethereal path”, “Before me opens an ivory path that has no name / Is this the crossing of everything, nothing / The further I proceed the less I am”, “A pale figure, impales the space / Split in two, double-coiled, enter, into the womb / 1000 arms reach out, ash-trees, ash-three / 1000 eyes gaze upon you”).The band’s musical style is torn between Post-Psychedelic, reverb-drenched clean guitar arpeggios, sudden and intense B-tuned Post-Doom sections, bipolar “spiritual-blackish” vocal style and mostly slow, but conventional rhythms. Some goons call this slow-evolving style as “Ritual Ambient”, but, in truth, the past songs were hardly more direct and simple. Take the 9-minutes instrumental “The Flow of Seething Visions”: it’s a slur of electric/Classical guitar arpeggios that wants desperately to evoke Al Di Meola’s sudden fingerpicking virtuosism with almost funereal single-string crawling acute notes. The longest songs tend to stick to the low B note to evoke claustrophobic settings, while the clean guitar arpeggios are supposed to hypnotize and seduce the listener.Though the album is not exactly a “Pop listening”, the album works, albeit in an Avant-Garde way. Though the progressions are too much simple to evoke strains of sophisticated Jazz/Fusion, listeners familiar with the genre may recognize the same hooking factor typical of such albums. The album doesn’t offer much variation, but some tracks are actually solid and recommended to be listened many times. It may not collect on all levels, but Voidwards is still recommendable.Highlights: “Ivory Artery”, “The Flow of Seething Visions”, “Raja Naga – Rising”.
