Mexican corridos are stories told in song. The word comes from correr, the Spanish verb meaning to run, and indicates that there is to be a running narrative. The use is limited-not all tales are called corridos-and usually love stories are not included. New stories with embellishments are the most customary. Los corridos mexicanos son historias narradas en canción. FW06913, FP 6913, FW 6913.

The first album in Arhoolie's superb Tex-Mex series, this traces the roots of the modern norteño-Tejano-conjunto sound. We hear the early accordion players and duet singers, then see them come together in the 1930s and '40s, forming the heart of the style as it has existed ever since. All the key names are here, from the blind fiddler El Ciego Melquiades to the magnificent Texan diva Lydia Mendoza, accordion pioneers Santiago Jiménez and Narciso Martinez, and the trend-setting Alegres de Teran. Its across-the-board approach gathered in canciones corridos rancheras polkas waltzes and boleros to produce a fascinating overview of the period 1928 – 1958. The CD has been extended to 26 tracks (74:40) and those original tracks since issued on other CDs have been replaced by other performances by the same artists.

Academic study of corridos written during the Revolution shows that they were used as a means to communicate news throughout Mexico as a response to the propaganda being spread in the newspapers which were owned by the corrupt government of Porfirio Díaz. Sheet music of popular corridos was sold or included in publications. The Kennedy Corridos: A Study of the Ballads of a Mexican American Hero (Center for Mexican-American Studies, University of Texas at Austin, 1978). The Mexican Corrido as a Source of an Interpretive Study of Modern Mexico, 1870–1950 (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1957).

The mexican revolution 2: La revolucion maderista y el cuartelazo. Topics Related to the Mexican Revolution: 2. Corridos de la Revolución Maderista y el Cuartelazo. The initial phase of the Mexican Revolution, referred to in Spanish as la Revolución Maderista (1910-1913), although of crucial historical importance, seems to have produced relatively few corridos that have survived to occupy an enduring place in the national repertoire.
