Nā Mele Hawai'i: A Rediscovery of Hawaiian Vocal Music 2014. Cantiga No. 166, "Como Poden per sas Culpas". By Alfonso X El Sabio. The Rose Ensemble, Stephen O'Malley, Dan McGreevy, Marco Benevento, Reed Mathis & Jamie Saft). Pues que tu, Reina del cielo.

A journey through Hawai’i‘s musical heritage – steeped in tradition, transformed by worldwide influences and reborn through the struggle to carry the past into the present. An artistic legacy that looks and sounds nothing like a stereotype. Rosa das Rosas: Cantigas de Santa Maria & Other Spiritual Songs for the Virgin. A delightful collection of over 300 years of vocal and instrumental music highlighting the life and legacy of Saint Francis of Assisi.

The Rose Ensemble, based not in Hawaii but in St. Paul, MN, uncovers a range of music that will be unfamiliar to most listeners, probably even in Hawaii. The temporal range runs from the 1830s to about the 1910s, just before the Hawaiian craze made the music of the islands internationally popular. Finally there is the Mele Hawai'I, or Hawaiian song, influenced by American music but with many Hawaiian practitioners, most prominently Hawaii's last monarch, Queen Lili'uokalani. It was she who composed the heartbreaking song of farewell and loss that became the most familiar of all Hawaiian pieces, Aloha Oe, very nicely performed here by vocal soloists Heather Cogswell and Kim Sueoka.
