Silfra, the first collaboration between Hilary Hahn and Hauschka, will be released in May 2012 by Deutsche Grammophon. Silfra is the culmination of a two-year exploratory improvisation project by Grammy Award-winning American violinist Hilary Hahn and prepared-piano master and innovator Volker Bertelmann (Hauschka). The music on this ambitious and free-spirited collection is a tribute to the Silfra rift in Iceland, an otherworldly landscape that inspired the two musicians to create a body of work that is evocative, hypnotic and truly breathtaking.

For classical violin star Hilary Hahn, however, improvisation is new territory. For the first time, Silfra captures her without a score on hand. Pairing a violinist with an experimental tinkerer could yield mixed results. But Hahn and Hauschka’s hookup feels natural and sounds even more naturalistic. Almost all of the music on Silfra was recorded over a ten-day stretch in Iceland. The record is named after an idyllic fissure near Reykjavík where tectonic plates meet under a lake of clear water. The pair has this landscape in mind, conjuring images of creeping glaciers and.
Silfra is the result of Hahn and Hauschka's disappearing into an Iceland studio, feeling their way around each other, and recording an album based on their resulting improvisations. This sounds like a recipe for an undercooked mess, but Silfra succeeds where Hauschka's solo records haven't always, in part because his world sounds fuller and more inviting with collaborators in it. Silfra feels and sounds like two serious-minded musicians growing increasingly comfortable with each other, allowing themselves to be playful and silly. Together, they have managed to build a livelier,.

Hilary Hahn & Hauschka – Photo: Mareike Foecking. If you’re familiar with Hahn’s work, you know that she usually commands melody; if you’re familiar with Hauschka’s, you know that he usually defies it. They have met each other halfway, Hahn recording subtly dissonant notes as if she is working with a prepared violin, Hauschka downplaying tonal experimentation and focusing on each composition’s narrative effect.
Hilary Hahn and Hauschka's new album, Silfra, comes out May 22. Mareike Foecking. Proper concert violinists aren't supposed to do what Hilary Hahn does. The title, Silfra, comes from the serene Icelandic landscape near Reykjavik where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates almost touch within a lake of uncommonly clear and cold water. It's a prized hangout for scuba divers who can literally swim between the continents. But Hahn and Hauschka think of it more "like a seam binding two entities than a rift. It's a handy metaphor for this fascinating new album - where two opposite and unlikely musicians meet in a special place to make music of the unknown.
