My Greatest Achievement: My 15 y-o- Daughter!"

Adam’s songs were always at their best when they were works in progress and were always worked on over the years – like the many versions of Physical and Whip In My Valise you can track down – there is no set in stone final version and this album captures this approach. It’s like an artist painting several paintings all at once with a heedful of brilliant ideas – the true art is the flash of inspiration and not in the polish. There is the tribute to Malcolm McLaren, Who’s a Goofy Bunny? With the title referencing the Sex Pistols maverick manager’s big teeth in an affectionate tribute to the big inspiration behind Adam and the one he had a curious business relationship with, not content with this there is also a song about Malcolm’s partner Vivienne Westwood called Vivienne’s Tears.

Last time Adam Ant released an album, chart success was possible, even expected, so he indulged in his softer side on 1993's Wonderful. Those were different times. It's hard to tell and ultimately it matters little, because much of the appeal of The BlueBlack Hussar is its mess, how the Adam works feverishly to incorporate any idea he's ever had into one album. He's working with a couple of guitarists - he fell out with old mate Marco Pirroni early on in its composition - relying mainly on Morrissey lieutenant Boz Boorer but also finding room for 3 Colours Red guitarist Chris McCormack, who provides the album's harder, steelier punch

Sadly, I've seen this album touted as "Adam Ant's comeback album" which will mislead people into thinking that it's a properly produced and completed new album. Instead it's a collection of demos and outtakes that seem to be compiled from the last few decades. Think of it as a follow up to the "Redux" collection of demos. For me, this album gives a tantalizing glimpse of Adam's genius and hints at what could have been released if a record label had just had some faith in him. But even though this dandy highwayman has been shunned by the major labels, this album, at least, shows that a pirate attitude is still alive and daring to release these recordings without requiring those corporate masters. All said, I'd love to hear finished versions of these songs but, even so, I'm happy to have added this album to my somewhat obsessive Ant collection. Reply Notify me 3 Helpful.

Marrying the Gunner's Daughter You know me, I go too far Like a heifer to the slaughter Here he comes, the Blueblack Hussar. Strapped to a gun ain't much fun But it's all that he had left Got a number one, just for fun Started playing Russian roulette. Adam Ant: Thanks a lot. Weve been touring pretty solidly for about 18 months, so our bands really tight now. Ive got a really good band behind me and it makes it a lot easier. Were just rehearsing, doing a mini-tour of Britain and then coming to the States in July. NP: Right, you did a series of sold out shows last year. How did you pull things back together? How did the new album, the new band, and the live shows come about? AA: It was really late 2010. I kind of feel putting them in a song is the best place, it lets the audience make their own mind up. It is probably the most autobiographical album Ive made, but I felt ready for that. Its like the tenth album, so its about time I suppose. NP: In the track Shrink you match the words dedication and medication.

Adam Ant's first album in 18 years is a double LP that speaks in a variety of voices and styles that the Ant faithful, who recall his punk roots, will surely understand. Once a polished performer who knew that style was as important as substance in the temporary world of pop music, Ant has dropped all pretenses and dared to play it hard and straight and use this album as a confessional of sorts. The vocals are raw. The backing vocals are rawer. Cool Zombie" kicks off as a blues. Stay in the Game" follows with a psychedelic weirdness most associated with Julian Cope.
