New Year's Eve Concert - Berlin 1992. 145 by Claudio Abbado;Martha Argerich;Berliner Philharmoniker. New Year's Day in Berlin, 1992, wasn't good for heart patients at this high-energy, sometimes nerve-wracking concert. The overall breathless tone is set from the opening ars of Don Juan, which is something of an assualt. Fortunately, the performance calms down, and although not overly fast at 16 mi. it's by no means romantic or relaxed.

Through much of his recording career, Claudio Abbado was most closely associated with Deutsche Grammophon. There is no Bruckner or Mahler here, but there is a Beethoven symphony, a one-off Ninth, with the Berlin orchestra and a stellar quartet of soloists – Eaglen, Meier, Heppner and Terfel – recorded in Salzburg in 1996 and conveying an electric sense of occasion.
Claudio Abbado, Cavaliere di Gran Croce OMRI (Italian pronunciation: ; 26 June 1933 – 20 January 2014) was an Italian conductor
One year later he conducted with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. After serving with La Scala for more than 25 years, he was elected as the music director of the Vienna State Opera in 1986, a position he held until 1991. 28, 29 and 35, Dvorak's Eighth Symphony, Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony, the 1992 New Year's Eve Concert and a second recording titled Posthorn Serenade, a 1991 Music for Europa concert in Prague.
