Georg Graewe - Chamber Works 1990-1992 mp3 download
The chamber music of composer, pianist, and improviser Georg Graewe has been something of a myth these past 20 years. Often bantered about in journals and among fans, it has been performed only sporadically, and almost never been recorded. The appearance of this volume of his works from 1992, then, is a special treat.

GEORG GRÄWE is a third stream, jazz related improv/composition, 21st century modern avant-garde jazz music artist. He also got into jazz, and in 1974, formed the Georg Gräwe Quintet. Since, he has led groups ranging from chamber orchestra to trios. For 11 years, starting in 1982, Graewe directed the ten-piece chamber ensemble,, which included such extraordinary musicians as Franz Koglmann and Theo Jorgensmann. Chamber Works 1990-92 Third Stream 1993.
Pianist Georg Graewe will give a solo performance on Wed, May 19, at 8 pm in Nelson Music Room on Duke's East Campus. The show is also an unofficial cd release party for Georg's new Wobbly Rail quintet disk "Concert in Berlin 1996 - Snapshots 1-53. For jazz pianist Georg Graewe, performing and improvising is visiting the past, setting an accent against or with others, or combining them. His other ensembles work similarly, on 'Chamber Works 1990-1992' (Random Acoustics) embellished with Minton's voice and le Baron's harp. Here you hear Satie-like lightness, Dada-esque nonchalance, a music that can float right by you, or into you For fans of free improv, a welcome addition. For the initiate, a good place to start.
Could Georg Graewe be a chameleonic figure in the world of jazz improvisation? Listening to a selection of recordings from over the last decade or two, it soon becomes clear that this German pianist is frequently found in completely different settings, with his music consequently traversing the distance from intensely thoughtful sparseness through to throttling, high-density hyperactivity. Perhaps it will be possible to discern the "real Graewe when he appears at New York's The Stone in the Fall, 2007, playing a set of completely solo piano works. His New York appearances have been extremely rare and, if Graewe recalls correctly, he was last here in November, 2000. The naming of Graewe's Sonic Fiction ensemble refers back to the title of his 1989 hatART album with Reijseger and Hemingway. Almut has been studying with me in Berlin since 2003.
Graewe's work as a composer includes compositions for symphony orchestras, chamber music, and works for solo piano. The end of the 1990s found him leading a quartet with reedsman Frank Gratkowski, Chicago jazz percussionist Hamid Drake, and bassist Kent Kessler; performing in a group called Torque with Melvyn Poore and Peter van Bergen; and touring the . with Reijseger and Hemingway.
