Release date: 01 June 2015. Country: United Kingdom. When I interviewed him a couple of months ago, Rolo Tomassi’s James Spence offered up a startlingly robust critique of the band’s last record, Astraea. The ramifications of this change in operation are obvious; for a start, Grievances is an incredibly atmospheric piece of work, with the kind of cohesive feel that only sustained, uninterrupted writing and recording stints tend to be able to deliver. It’s a dark affair, foreboding at its lightest and unremittingly bleak at its blackest, and with little in the way of genuine gaps between tracks, the way in which the songs flow in and out of each other transforms the record into a long, unsettling suite.

Grievances is Rolo Tomassi’s darkest album. Delving deeply into the darkest corners of one’s being, the lyrical content paints an image of a soul brimming with regret, helplessness and remorse, grasping at any opportunity for blissful relief. Similarly, this is illustrated through feverish math melodies. Estranged bursts forth with stressful rhythms that collide together with trace amounts of finesse, abruptly pausing for temporary peace via tender keyboards

A decent take on the hardcore genre, with random reoccuring bits of mathematical structure. The female vocals added a lot to the mood of the album. The lyrics are also well-chosen.
