Samuel Barber (1910-81) and William Schuman (1912) are major figures in American music, but their choral music is little known. Barber seems particularly at home in this repertoire, with a naturally lyrical expressive manner. The Agnus Dei will be familiar to anyone who has heard his best-known composition, the Adagio for Strings, as it reworks that score. Most successful it is too, beautifully capturing that tender nostalgia which is the music’s essential nature

Samuel Barber's music, masterfully crafted and built on romantic structures and sensibilities, is at once lyrical, rhythmically complex, and harmonically rich. Born 9 March 1910 in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Barber wrote his first piece at age 7 and attempted his first opera at age 10. At the age of 14 he entered the Curtis Institute, where he studied voice, piano, and composition. Later, he studied conducting with Fritz Reiner. At Curtis, Barber met Gian Carlo Menotti with whom he would form a lifelong personal and professional relationship

Peter Broadbent’s Joyful Company of Singers acquit themselves extremely well, though a rival version of both this item and the Op. 16 triptych, Reincarnations, from The Sixteen under Harry Christophers is perhaps even more technically accomplished.
