The Great Molasses Flood, also known as the Boston Molasses Disaster or the Great Boston Molasses Flood, and sometimes referred to locally as the Boston Molassacre, occurred on January 15, 1919 in the North End neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts
Blending elements of jazz, rock and Neapolitan folk, whilst also featuring a strong symphonic streak, this is one of the all-time great Italian prog-rock album's from the country's golden era. 15. Quintessentially British and key purveyors of the Canterbury sound, the trademark Caravan mixture of light, jazzy breaks, witty lyrics, epic organ solos and intricate instrumental flourishes truly came into being on this delightfully inventive second album from 1970. Dave Sinclair's virtuoso displays on the organ, as found on the twelve-minute suite 'Can't Be Long Now', are simply astonishing. Issued in 1971 and their first studio album since the poor-selling 'Atom Heart Mother', this is the first true Floyd masterpiece, blending a disparate array of styles that run the gamut from full on space-rock to febrile ethnic folk, lazy sunday blues and lazily-strummed acoustica.
Despite the relative ugliness of the band’s name (which goes double for the album title), the Meat Purveyors’ Sweet in the Pants is a surprisingly faithful slice of contemporary alt-country sounds. In retrospect, 1998 feels like a music year in transition. In the mainstream, the surge of alternative music energy that had powered the first half of the ’90s was starting to fizzle; grunge had been fully co-opted, and nü-metal was ascendant. The tide of the CD boom was still lifting all boats, even as Napster and mp3s were right around the corner, and teen pop was about to have its big moment. The term ‘Post-Rock’ was coined in the 70s by writer James Wolcott to describe Todd Rundgren’s more esoteric excursions into song. Simon Reynolds employed it – and made it stick – to describe Hex, an album subsequently perceived as the starting point of Post-Rock as a genre. It’s a weighty mantle, but even a cursory blast of Hex will testify as to how well Bark Psychosis carry it. All the ingredients are there- surfsploitation guitar, muted horn refrains and a distinctly cinematic aura.
Though Boston's Finest hints at the darkest corners of American street life, its real aim seems to be a showcase of local heroism. The Boston Globe's Matthew Gilbert criticized the show for its lack of action, stating "Boston's Finest may be too aimless and pointless to inspire loyal viewing. It is one of Boston's finest Art Deco buildings, including an elaborately decorated lobby. It was built for the United Shoe Machinery Corporation, which at the time controlled 98% of the nation's shoe machinery business. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and in 1983 it was designated a Boston Landmark with rare interior (lobby) as well as exterior protection by the Boston Landmarks Commission.
