This live recording,made at the Yacht Club,NYC,on October 14 and 18,1938,is exceptionnal for many reasons; first,this is,I think,Fats' only live recording; then,the sound quality is really great,even better than on some studio sessions (it's rare to hear so perfectly Slick Jones' drumming);and Fats is in a great mood,swinging like. mad through "honeysuckle rose","pent up in a penthouse","after you've gone","flat foot floogee" and "Yacht Club swing"  . That's why this album is a must for every jazz lover.

Fats Waller made hundreds of studio recordings. He also left in his wake a stream of broadcast air checks from 1938 and 1940. These were issued on vinyl LPs during the mid-'80s by the Giants of Jazz, Radiola, Legend and Sandy Hook labels.

Fats Waller's father, Edward Waller, was a Baptist lay preacher who conducted open air religious services in Harlem, at which as a child Waller played reed organ. He played piano at his public school and at the age of 15 became organist at the Lincoln Theatre on 135th Street. His father hoped that Waller would follow a religious calling rather than a career in jazz, but after the death of his mother Adeline Waller in 1920, he moved in with the family of the pianist Russell B. T. Brooks.
