Greg Piccolo: Homage. It's a pleasant change to be able to see the relationship between an album, the music on it and the way it's played. On his fourth album, tenor saxophonist Greg Piccolo pays "homage" to great rough and ready, blues based, honking R & B tinged and all out swinging sax players like Illinois Jacquet, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Piccolo's friend Red Prysock, with nods along the way to Ben Webster and Lester Young. But it's the opener, "Illinois Blows the Blues", that sets the tone for this album. The intensity of Piccolo's playing on this cut takes one's breath away. The repeating of chords, the high note screeches capsulize what was meant by the Rhythm and Blues sax. This one makes one want to roll the rug up and rock and roll 1950's style.

Piccolo is a 1977 release by the Ron Carter Quartet. The quartet consists of Ron Carter on piccolo bass, Kenny Barron on piano, Buster Williams on double bass, and Ben Riley on drums. The album was recorded live at Sweet Basil in New York City on March 25–26, 1977. Piccolo is considered one of Ron Carter's best albums from the late 1970s due to its excellent recording, live-club feel, and exquisite musicianship.

Former Roomful of Blues vocalist and saxman Greg Piccolo was born May 10, 1951 in Westerly, Rhode Island. At the age of 13 he was playing sax with a six-piece rock band, the Rejects. Two years later he joined Duke Robillard as a vocalist for the Variations, a British Invasion cover band. Piccolo rejoined Robillard in 1970 to create the first incarnation of Roomful of Blues, inspired by Buddy Johnson's R&B band. In 2000 he released Homage, a solo album that paid tribute to classic tenor players. During the new millennium he has remained active as a sideman, including playing with Jimmie Vaughan's Tilt-A-Whirl Band at live gigs across the United States.
