Peals – Walking Field (Thrill Jockey) LP/CD/DL 13 May 2013. New band, Peals, release their début album of stripped down instrumentals. Louder Than War’s Paul Scott-Bates gives us his thoughts. Formed in 2012, Baltimore duo Peals is William Cashion of Future Islands and Bruce Willen from Double Dagger. Their punk roots have been firmly shelved in an album containing eight tracks of the highest quality. Opening track ‘Floating Leaf’ begins in an Oriental style of layered strings before closing with a couple of minutes of drone. Walking Field’ is a great album, full of surprises and full of good solid tunes. You could do a lot worse than give it a listen. All words by Paul Scott-Bates. More of Paul’s writing on Louder Than War can be found here.
Future Islands and Double Dagger, the former a synthpop outfit and the latter a bunch of rowdy rockers who recently called it a day, are both popular artists in their own Baltimore scene. Walking Field - Very Good, Based on 4 Critics. With that in mind, the collaboration between William Cashion of the former and Bruce Willen of the latter as Peals is an intriguing one. One would be forgiven for thinking that the fruits of their work would be upfront and in-your-face.
LP (12" album, 33 rpm). Walking Field s home-recorded sessions followed an analog approach, welcoming the happy accidents and unplanned moments that bring their musics most organic qualities to the fore. With no bass guitars or drums present on the album all percussion sounds were generated by contact with guitars and microphones the emphasis here is placed on texture and feeling. Songs flow one into the next, talking to each other as they take the listener on an intuitive journey to destinations unknown
Walking Field thus represents Cashion and Willen’s escape to cottage country, an opportunity to decompress, clear their heads, and experiment with more relaxed, exploratory modes of music-making than their day jobs allow. True to their mellow-out mission, the duo have taken to performing in a stage set-up that resembles a living room
