OSSODRE Gisele Ben-Dor (April 26, 1955) is an American Israeli orchestra conductor of Uruguayan origin
Argentine tango master Astor Piazzolla strove during the early part of his career to become a classical composer, writing music in conventional classical forms and traveling to Paris to study with the famed pedagogue Nadia Boulanger. She told him to stick with the tango. Various recordings, most notably those by violinist Gidon Kremer and cellist Yo-Yo Ma, have offered the music of the mature Piazzolla in arrangements for classical ensembles, but only this novel release from Delos has explored manifestations of Piazzolla's work within a purely classical sphere.

Gisèle Ben-Dor, Santa Barbara Symphony - The Soul Of Tango (CD, Album).
Ben-Dor casts her spell," the Boston Globe reported, "a tremendous musician, expert technician, charismatic performer. Her latest disc on Delos entitled The Soul of Tango with the Santa Barbara Symphony includes tango-related works by Argentine composers Piazzolla and Academy Award winner Luis Bakalov, including two world premieres and featuring Bandonean virtuoso Juanjo Mosalini. Ms Ben-Dor currently has a multiple disc contract with Naxos for new recordings of music of Ginastera (notably Ollantay and Popol Vuh) with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Maestra Ben-Dor is currently Conductor Laureate of the Santa Barbara Symphony.
John Sunier, of Audiophile Audition, wrote approvingly: Two world premiere symphonic recordings plus two delightful tangos. This CD is the record of a memorable event in Santa Barbara, California, that makes the disc stand out from the steady flow of tango-based albums. It features two world premiere recordings of the pair of major works here. The second movement text honors the greatest tango singer, Carlos Gardel, while the fourth speaks of nostalgia for the Buenos Aires of old. The Three Movements was the only work for bandoneon and large orchestra composed by the young Piazzolla. Igor Markevitch conducted the premiere performance of the symphonic movements in 1953. The album is rounded out with one of the most striking and popular melodies from each composer: Piazzolla’s Oblivion and Bacalov’s theme from the Italian film Il Postino.
