One of jazz's most celebrated arrangers and composers, Gil Evans recorded for many labels during his 50-plus years in jazz. His Columbia and RCA periods were long and particularly fruitful ones because of the musicians he surrounded himself with. While it's true that his collaboration with Miles Davis is the most celebrated and well known, some of the other players who appeared on Evans' own records were Billy Harper, Jerome Richardson, Tony Williams, David Sanborn, Peter Gordon, Lee Konitz, Johnny Coles, Lew Soloff, Julius Watkins, Elvin Jones, Ryo Kawasaki, and dozens more.

Gil Evans interview on Jazz Legends. Arranger and bandleader. One of the most unorthodox and revolutionary arrangers in jazz, Gil Evans explored orchestral colour and texture with extraordinary skill, frequently using just a handful of instruments to create the illusion of much larger forces, and introducing the timbres of French horn and orchestral tuba to the big band brass section.

Complete" in this case refers to two LPs worth of primo early Gil Evans. The first LP on this disc answers the question of what would have happened if Evans had written a concerto for anyone other than Miles Davis. New Bottle, Old Wine" is a version of the "Miles Ahead" concerto concept for Cannonball Adderley. What makes this release essential is the second LP it showcases, Great Jazz Standards. What a talented cast of soloists Evans brought to this material. Steve Lacy shines, as you would expect, with a skating solo through Monk's "Straight No Chaser. Trumpeter Johnny Coles casts a moody spell with his mournful solo on "Django.
