Yehudi Menuhin, Baron Menuhin OM KBE (22 April 1916 – 12 March 1999) was an American-born violinist and conductor, who spent most of his performing career in Britain. He is widely considered one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century. Yehudi Menuhin - The Album released: 1998. The Very Best of Grappelli & Menuhin released: 1998. BBC Music, Volume 6, Number 1: Yehudi Menuhin released: 1997.
Menuhin's next bid at eternity took place on November 13 and December 11, 1929, this time with German pianist Hubert Giesen and eight compositions, including two pieces of substance: Beethoven's first Violin and Piano Sonata and Bach's 3rd Sonata for solo violin - the first of Menuhin's four studio recordings (his first complete recording was made in the. 1930s although the 2nd Sonata was never released on 78rpm, the next came in 1957, and the last in 1973-5). In the liner notes to a competing reissue on EMI References (Menuhin Plays Enescu, Szymanowski, Prokofiev, Ravel), Menuhin recalls having learnt the piece with Enescu, who, according to him, "played it like no-one else, but this is almost the way he played it". But he doesn't say if the cuts he makes were exercised by Enescu, some of them in transitional passages for piano alone but one cutting into a passage with violin at 7:07.
On this day in 1999, Yehudi Menuhin died at the age of 82. Watch how effortlessly the violin legend could segue from a soaring Ave Maria to a fleet-fingered Flight of the Bumblebee.
Menuhin's beloved Bartók, Ravel and Enescu are much in evidence and the album contains two full concertos – Mendelssohn's and Vivaldi's, for two violins. Hope produces a superbly confident and sonorous tone and his performances here would have made his mentor proud. The Wedding March (drunk version) is the funniest thing you could hear on your special day. Can we please just take a moment to recognise how incredible Janine Jansen sounds here? LA Phil.
