Abbado's newer set with the BPO is very modern, taking the Del Mar approach to the extreme, with light textures, fast tempi and definitely (annoyingly) subdued horns. Incidentally, I saw Abbado and the BPO perform this work live in Costa Mesa many years ago, and it was much closer to Karajan's approach than Abbado's DG recording in the Philharmonie. A curious discrepancy.
