La Venexiana / Claudio Cavina - Luzzasco Luzzaschi: Concerto delle Dame mp3 download
The Concerti delle Dame, or Concerts of the Ladies, were secret events held by the Duke of Ferrara, using a consort of sopranos at his court. But these works experimented with the declamatory, chordal, highly ornamented style that became known as the seconda pratica. Claudio Cavina, La Venexiana.
Claudio Cavina and La Venexiana now return to the end of the 16th century, following the 'Poppea' of Monteverdi with the 'Artemisia' by Cavalli. They put their distinctively Italian mark on what was, for a long time, 'secret' music: that composed by Luzzasco Luzzaschi when he was serving the ducal court of Alfonso II of Ferrara. Alfonso brought together 'singing ladies', the Concerto delle Dame, virtuoso performers on instruments as well as with the voice, to delight and entertain the duke?s wife, as well as privileged members of the court

Though Claudio Cavina's fine group are best known for their recordings of the two greatest late-renaissance madrigal composers, Gesualdo and Monteverdi, they have not neglected the works of less celebrated 16th-century composers. There are already La Venexiana discs of madrigals by Marenzio and D'India, as well as one devoted to Luzzasco Luzzaschi (c 1545-1607), who was born in Ferrara and spent his working life in the service of the d'Este family
Luzzasco Luzzaschi (c. 1545 – 10 September 1607) was an Italian composer, organist, and teacher of the late Renaissance. He was born and died in Ferrara, and despite evidence of travels to Rome it is assumed that Luzzaschi spent the majority of his life in his native city. He was a skilled representative of the late Italian madrigal style, along with Palestrina, Wert, Monte, Lassus, Marenzio, Gesualdo and others.

La Venexiana (founded 1995) is an Italian early music ensemble founded and led by Claudio Cavina, an Italian countertenor and conductor. Cavina studied in Bologna with the American singer and musicologist Candace Smith, and then with the Swiss baritone Kurt Widmer and Belgian countertenor and conductor René Jacobs at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, then appeared regularly as a countertenor soloist and in choral works.
The Ferrarese Luzzasco Luzzaschi, a pupil of Cipriano de Rore and teacher in turn of Girolamo Frescobaldi, much admired and praised by the self-same Gesualdo da Venosa, has passed into history as the principal musical inspiration for the Concerto delle Dame, that vocal trio with instrumental accompaniment (for which Glossa has very recently produced a new recording)
