Vintage Sophie Tucker, Vol. Sophie Tucker: Jazz Age Hot Mamma. If you want to recreate the atmosphere of the gilded Jazz Age (that's the 1920s for all the kids out there), you could do worse than to listen to the Vaudeville songs of Sophie Tucker. She dazzled the English-speaking world and worked plenty of steam under those starched collars with more salty tunes than a sailor.

A young Sophie Abuza honed her singing skills by entertaining patrons at her family's cafe in Hartford, Connecticut. A brief marriage to Louis Tuck with the later addition of "er" to her surname provided Sophie Tucker with one of the best-known stage names of the day. Tucker's impressive career started in the 1900s Ragtime era, thrived through the Jazz age and swing era and continued nearly to the time of her death in 1966. Our release includes songs recorded from 1922 to 1929, a time in which Tucker was a vaudeville headliner (today we use the term "superstar") and celebrity nightclub performer. Tucker's theme song over these years was Some Of These Days. The first six titles, from the early 1920s, were recorded acoustically (. without a microphone. That means literally shouting into a horn) a process for which her powerful voice excelled.

Sophie married a man named Louis Tuck at age 16 and had a son, Albert, a year later, at which point Tuck left her. Changing her married name to Tucker to produce her stage name, Sophie moved to New York to pursue a singing career, initially performing at small cafés and beer halls. Tucker eventually got an agent, who helped her break into vaudeville in 1906. At the behest of her handlers, she usually worked in blackface early in her career, under the logic that since she was rather generously built and plain of face, her audiences might not otherwise take to her.
