Though the album is mostly instrumental, a couple tracks offer quirky song structures, the very short "Watch Time Flow By" and a couple short sections in the long title track, while "Snakeskin Tango" has someone moaning in anguish and the middle section of "Bosco Biati Weiss Alles" contains strange wordless vocal drones. Through it all, Brainstorm has crafted top-notch music that combines the manic energy and flippancy of rock with the loose fluidity and chops of jazz, with dynamic arrangements, a sense of humor, and excellent musicianship

Brainstorm's debut offers an odd twist on jazz-rock, throwing in bits of Canterbury and Frank Zappa, as well as the Dutch band Supersister. The record starts off with the explosive energy of the instrumental "Das Schwein Trugt," a fast piece of complex prog-jazz. Smile A While is wild and woolly European fusion at it's best, what i like to label "bonkers, but brilliant". Their approach to jazz-rock on this record is mostly unbridled and frenetic, though at times they can slow things down and even get a bit moody, though never loosing your interest for a moment

Smile A While' was their first release as Brainstorm, after developing a deadly reputation under the name of Fashion Pink. The group featured four virtuoso players, masters of flute, clarinet, and sax (tenor and soprano) alongside the more typical drums and guitars, creating a sound inspired by both US and UK rock and blues from The Soft Machine to The Rolling Stones, but with a jazz awareness and free complexity indebted to John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders. With this album they established themselves as one of Germany's premier progressive bands.
