Sample this album Artist (Sample). Walter Gieseking (1895- 1956) was one of the great pianists, famous for his photographic memory and range of tones and shadings. Although he is most admired for his Debussy and Ravel, he could play anything from Bach to Beethoven to Rachmaninoff; and from Busoni, Hindemith & Schoenberg. His signature sound was finesse rather than power. I own six complete sets of the Beethoven piano sonatas from various artists, and probably 50 more individual CD's, and if I could only take one, this would be the CD.
